Azure global infrastructure 🌍
Microsoft has highly secured datacenter facilities spread across the world, creating a distributed datacenter infrastructure that supports thousands of online services. This globally distributed infrastructure is designed with sustainability in mind to bring applications closer to users, preserve data residency, and offer comprehensive compliance and resiliency options for customers.

Scalability and Its Importance
From a business point-of-view, scalability is the ability to serve customers seamlessly even when a sudden change in demand occurs. From an IT point-of-view, scalability is the ability to add/remove infrastructure resources needed by business applications to manage the increased/decreased demand in the number of business transactions.
Cloud computing by itself, however, doesn’t magically deliver scalability. Without a deliberate approach to design scalability into an architecture, business applications can fail to adapt to a spike in transactions leading to bad customer experiences, lost opportunities, and eventually impact revenue in a noticeable way.
The Power of Scalability 📈 📉
- Scalability is fundamental for businesses facing dynamic workloads. It allows them to optimize resource usage, maintain performance during traffic spikes, and scale down during periods of reduced demand.
Azure Virtual Machines (VMs) as a Solution:
- Azure Virtual Machines (VMs) are a core component of Microsoft Azure’s infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) offering. They provide on-demand computing resources in the form of virtualized servers, offering flexibility and control over various aspects of the computing environment.
Advantages:
- Flexibility: Azure VMs support a wide range of operating systems and applications, allowing businesses to choose the environment that best suits their needs.
- Scalability: With Azure VMs, businesses can easily scale resources up or down based on demand, ensuring optimal performance.
- Customization: Users have control over VM configurations, enabling them to tailor computing power, storage, and networking to specific requirements.
Azure Virtual Machine Scale Sets
Azure Virtual Machine Scale Sets let you create and manage a group of load balanced VMs. The number of VM instances can automatically increase or decrease in response to demand or a defined schedule. Scale sets provide the following key benefits:
- Easy to create and manage multiple VMs
- Provides high availability and application resiliency by distributing VMs across availability zones or fault domains
- Allows your application to automatically scale as resource demand changes
- Works at large-scale
Overprovisioning in VMSS:
- Definition: Azure Virtual Machine Scale Sets (VMSS) offer an option called overprovisioning.
- Functionality: During scaling out, Azure may spin up more VMs than requested, ensuring stability.
- Variability: The number of overprovisioned VMs depends on the requested number and OS.
- De-provisioning: Unnecessary VMs are removed once the requested number is operational.
- Cost: No extra charges for excess VMs that are brought up and deallocated.
- Default Setting: Overprovisioning is ON by default.
Considerations:
- Auto-Scaling Implications: Overprovisioning may confuse Netreo’s auto-scaling engine during scale-out.
- Recommendation: If not crucial, consider disabling overprovisioning, especially if using Netreo’s auto-scaling.
- No Additional Cost: Disabling does not incur additional charges for excess VMs.
